The Sub-Committee was convened in 2006 and currently has five members:
Deirdre Conroy (Convener) is an art/architectural historian and building conservation consultant in private practice.
Willie Cumming is senior architect with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government working with the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. The inventory includes vernacular structures and surveys are published on the website http://www.buildingsofireland.ie
Charles Duggan is an art/architectural historian and assistant heritage officer with Dublin City Council.
Deirdre McDermott is a conservation architect in private practice.
Nicki Matthews is a conservation architect in private practice.
All members of the sub-committee have published material on aspects of planning, architecture and vernacular building, in particular thatched dwellings and farm buildings.
The sub-committee liaises with the General Assembly through the president of the International Scientific Committee of Vernacular Architecture (CIAV). CIAV works to a programme in a 3-year cycle in tandem with the main committee, generally with a theme based on the main international theme. Click here for further information on the CIAV.
Last year the international theme focused on "Vernacular Landscape in Danger" and this year the CIAV will join the ICOMOS general assembly in Québec City, Canada, and focus on the theme "Where lies the spirit of the place”.
