Objectives
We aim to highlight the issues facing vernacular buildings and to share methodology and knowledge with the wider community of conservation specialists.
Given the scope for adapting vernacular building research into the theme ‘Vernacular Landscape in Danger’ the objective is to compile our own research into a cohesive document on aspects of vernacular farm buildings which can be shared internationally.
We have chosen to focus on farm buildings, e.g. residential, animal housing, thatched dwellings, their place in the landscape and the impact of their demise or poor adaptation since they form an integral part of the vernacular landscape. Our rural built heritage, based around living and working off the land can equally be linked into the theme 'where lies the spirit of the place'. Identifying that spirit and evaluating its significance provides the necessary tools for protection of rural built heritage.
The theme of CIAV 2010 Annual Meeting is 'Vernacular Crossing Boarders'. A newsletter documenting the outcome of the conference in Norway can be found on the link below.
