Irish sub-committee
Given the scope for adapting our own vernacular building researches into the theme ‘Vernacular Landscape in Danger’ our objective is to compile our own research into a cohesive document on aspects of vernacular farm buildings which can be shared with the international membership.
We have chosen to focus on farm buildings, whether residential, animal housing, thatched dwellings, their place in the landscape and the impact of their demise or poor adaptation, because they form an integral part of the vernacular landscape. Our rural built heritage, based around living and working off the land can equally be linked into this year’s theme “Where lies the spirit of the place”. Identifying that spirit and evaluating its significance provides the necessary tools for protection of rural built heritage.
Aim
We will highlight the issues facing these vernacular buildings and contribute our methodology and knowledge to the wider community of conservation specialists through formal presentations to the international assembly. We will compile our research into a document that would eventually form part of the History of Traditional Construction project.
